Christmas & Nativity scenes
This year’s traditional nativity scene exhibition centres on the Baby Jesus. He is at the heart of the Christian Christmas story and is therefore also the central figure in nativity scenes. Depictions of the Baby Jesus have evolved over the centuries and are shaped by diverse religious beliefs, cultural traditions and artistic expressions. At times, the Baby Jesus is depicted richly clothed and adorned with precious ornaments; at others, as a revered figure of salvation or a vulnerable newborn. The nativity scenes and their figures touch upon fundamental themes of the Christmas story: humility and poverty, vulnerability and humanity, hope and confidence. As usual, the exhibition is accompanied by a varied programme of events for families.
