Building with gravity: Heinz Isler’s physical models

How does one build using gravity? The Swiss civil engineer Heinz Isler (1926–2009) did not design his elegant concrete shells on the drawing board, but through experimentation. Drawing on observations made in his garden and experiments with suspended models, foam and air, he sought the perfect architectural form. This guided tour takes you into Isler’s world and uses original models to show how iconic architecture emerged from the forces of gravity.

As part of the programme accompanying the exhibition ‘Models – Shaping Knowledge’ at extract, this tour takes you to a place where scientific models are still used today in research and teaching.
