PHÖNIX – On voluntary action and enforced breaks

A one-woman show by and starring Rhea Segeler. In her new play, the protagonist has turned her experiences of exhaustion, emptiness, loneliness and grief caused by mental illness into a moving and humorous piece.

Shortly after her 30th birthday, Rhea Segeler experiences a defining moment when her body and mind shut down and nothing works as it did before. Later, when her child is born, she faces discrimination as a so-called ‘dysfunctional’ mother and (socialised) woman. After initial feelings of shame, she decided to be open about her story. From that magical moment onwards, she has discovered how her own openness can encourage others to share and reflect.

In Swiss German, Rhea Segeler humorously and unfiltered highlights the absurdity of her everyday stories. With her vivid language, she invites the audience into her imperfect world of failure and offers a glimpse behind the facades into her chaotic mind. Through spoken and sung words, the protagonist expresses what is otherwise only thought.
