Literature in plain language
How can literature be made accessible to everyone? Literary language does not need to be complicated or eloquent to be effective. Hauke Hückstädt, director of the Literaturhaus Frankfurt, has invited renowned authors to write stories in plain language for ‘LiES. Das Buch’. Following the huge success of the first volume, volume 3 is due to be published this autumn, featuring, amongst others, a story by the Viennese author Vea Kaiser. Philip Sippel, co-curator of the ‘unlesbar’ exhibition, talks to Vea Kaiser and Hauke Hückstädt about the challenges of writing in simple language, about reading and the magic of restriction.
