Jan Willem de Vriend & the Kebyart Saxophone Quartet

A saxophone quartet playing 18th-century music? It is a bold combination, but the conductor Jan Willem de Vriend has always combined his experience of historically informed performance practice with a great enthusiasm for experimentation. He thus conducts arrangements of Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante and a ‘Kyrie’ by Antonio Vivaldi, in which the Kebyart ensemble takes the lead. The composers would likely have had no objection; after all, both frequently engaged with ‘exotic’ instruments: Mozart composed for the glass harmonica, amongst other things, whilst Vivaldi wrote for the mandolin. Had the saxophone existed in their day, they would hardly have missed out on this sound. Mozart himself, incidentally, was fond of adapting earlier works: Handel’s ‘Acis and Galatea’ is performed in this concert in his version.
