Who determined what the true faith was?

Constantine and the Question of Power

With Constantine, who became Roman Emperor in 312, Christianity began its rise to political power. For some, this marks the beginning of a golden age; for others, the decline of early Christian ideals. The close alliance between ecclesiastical and state power led to a flourishing culture, but at the same time meant that the persecuted became the persecutors. How did this alliance between church and state come about? What did it mean for religious freedom? How were conflicts resolved? This lecture explores how the ‘Constantinian Age’ shaped Europe and continues to have an impact to this day.
