Where everything flows
Art, urban culture and philosophy in ancient Asia Minor
The gods’ favourite land: the ancient cultural landscapes of what is now western Turkey – the Troad, Ionia and Lydia – bring together geography, history and mythology. Hector encounters the Aegean olive, the Meander flows alongside Thales’s theorem, and the Artemis of Ephesus kisses Heinrich Schliemann’s gleaming brow. Artists, historians and poets have long extolled the urban planning and architecture of Pergamon, Priene, Miletus and Aphrodisias in their works, and to this day spirit, beauty and mystery linger there, enticed by the fragrant logos of Heraclitus and Sappho’s fervent verses.
