Beyond All Rules – Friedrich Glauser and Adolf Wölfli

Incapacitation, drugs and welfare shaped his life: Friedrich Glauser (1896–1938) was a morphine-addicted outsider who nevertheless produced magnificent literature. With the Wachtmeister Studer novels, written whilst at the Münsingen psychiatric hospital, he laid the foundations for the modern crime novel. Adolf Wölfli (1864–1930), once a child in care, also remained on the fringes of society. Admitted to the Waldau in 1895, he created his body of work there and is today regarded as the epitome of Art Brut. On two occasions, bourgeois failure gave rise to artistic creativity. On an excursion, we follow in their footsteps.
