The Zurich Wind Ensemble mainly performs its own compositions – an offbeat mix of jazz, improvisation and banda music, which doesn’t shy away from bombastic tangos or chain-rattling prison blues either. Blasnost has a soft spot for endangered instruments such as the cornetto and bass saxophone, but also relies on more conventional instruments: the bass saxophone, bass clarinet and tuba lay the rhythmic foundation; whilst the trumpet, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, flute, trombone and natural horn take on the melodic roles – and sometimes the roles are simply swapped
