Sediments – documentary film

The film takes its starting point from conversations between the filmmaker and her grandfather, who breaks his silence out of fear of losing his memory. The film embarks on a journey through different time periods, shedding light on several eras of German history – National Socialism, the GDR and the post-reunification era. Memories and history merge into a powerful reflection on personal responsibility – at a time when the very foundations of democracy are being shaken. The central question lingers: What would we have done back then? And – even more urgently – what are we doing today? Laura Coppens, director/media anthropologist, University of Bern Bernhard Schneider, presenter Let’s Doc! is an initiative of the Ciné-Doc association, supported by the federal government, individual cantons and foundations. Since 2023, outstanding documentary films have been made available to a wide audience every November at over 200 venues across Switzerland. Documentary films are a mirror of our times; they are meant to be seen and discussed together.
