40 Years of Children’s and Youth Theatre in Zug | 10+

Friendship | Magic | Freedom

War, cold and hunger drive the fourteen-year-old orphan Krabat across the Saxon countryside – until enigmatic dreams lead him to the mysterious ‘Black Mill’. What begins as an apprenticeship turns out to be a place of dark magic and deadly danger. Under the master’s strict rule, Krabat learns not only the miller’s trade, but also the black arts, which promise power over both man and nature. When he falls in love with the girl Kantorka, the call for resistance, friendship and freedom stirs within him – and his struggle for his own soul becomes a struggle for the freedom of all the apprentices.

Otfried Preussler’s world-famous novel – long a classic of children’s literature, based on an ancient Sorbian legend – tells of seduction and the abuse of power, but also of love, friendship and trust in one’s own strength. ‘My Krabat is my story, the story of my generation and that of all young people who come into contact with power and its temptations,’ said Preussler himself.

The Zug Children’s and Youth Theatre has been in existence for 40 years and will celebrate its anniversary in the 2026/27 season with several productions in collaboration with cultural venues in Zug. Founder and artistic director Stefan Koch-Spinnler is directing the premiere of *Krabat* at the Theater Casino Zug.
