SINGLE SCREENING: William Friedkin's classic is perfect horror cinema. Linda Blair stands out from the great cast as the vomiting devil child.
Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn) is a much sought-after actress. She has moved into a house in Washington for filming, which she lives in with her twelve-year-old daughter Regan (Linda Blair), a nanny and two domestic servants. Regan, who has a very close and loving relationship with her mother, suddenly develops strange behavioural problems. She has aggressive fits and insults those around her in a disguised voice. All medical examinations come to nothing. As a last resort, the mother is referred to the church, where they agree to drive the evil spirit out of the girl by means of exorcism.
Baldwin also sees something frighteningly banal in the depiction of the devil. It primarily serves the fears of a wealthy white middle class, but the devil is much more than that: "I have seen the devil by day and by night, in you and in me. (...) This devil needs no dogma and no historical justification, because history is his invention. He doesn't make beds float or do nonsense with little girls: We do that!" (Cf. "The Devil Finds Work", page 121ff.)
