Zurich: Dialogues on Urban Densification

How can a city continue to develop without losing its quality? The current exhibition at ZAZ Bellerive explores this question and strikes a chord.

With industrialisation and the introduction of the railway in the 19th century, the city saw the emergence of massive brick buildings with huge chimneys, which are now being reimagined in the face of limited space. Often integrated into new high-rise developments, former industrial sites are also being transformed into venues for culture, sport and commerce. Prominent examples such as the Viaduktbögen, with their shops and cafés, are emblematic of this creative approach to the existing built environment.

Visitors are confronted with the challenges of the present day and find that there are no clear-cut, ready-made solutions. They witness a retrospective and a look ahead, and discover how tried-and-tested planning tools could be further developed. ‘Zurich: Dialogues on Densification’ is thus less an exhibition of ready-made answers than an invitation to think further – critically, complexly and surprisingly.
