TANDEMS FOR SWITZERLAND | A QUESTION OF GOGOL: MULTICULTURALISM AND FLUID IDENTITY

The texts of Gogol offer the reader a wide range of caricatures of the types of his time, from Ukrainian peasants to city officials. Gogol uses popular historical narratives to reflect on the social tensions of his time, ones related to the adaptation and aassssiimmii llaattiioonn of different people in the Russian Empire. A careful reading of "The Night Before Christmas" reveals a distinct "Gogolian" perspective on the issue of multiculturalism in the age of empires. The event also refers to the book “The sword language. How the Soviet empire used to speak”, and to the book “Cultural Expansion, essay anthology”, which were published in 2023 by the Ukrainian publishing house «Tvoya Pidpilna Humanitarka»

Speaker Ostap Ukrainets: Ukrainian writer and translator received his philological education at the National University of "Kyiw- Mohyla Akademy". He is a professional translator from a number of European languages. In 2017 he debuted as a writer with a historical novel “Malkhut”, the first part of a trilogy set in his native town Ivano-Frankivsk. Among the works translated by Ostap Ukrainets are T. S. Eliot's poem “The Waste Land”, works by H. P. Lovecraft, N. Stevenson, E.A. Poe, MD.itMchiteclhl,ell, M. Eminescu and others. He is a co-founder of educational project and a publishing house "Your Guerilla Humanities". Ostap featured as a guest lecturer in NaUKMA, UCU, PennState and other universities.
